OUR BEGINNING
On June 21, the Manitoba Skateboarding Coalition announced the opening of Pihtikwè Skatepark, a do-it-yourself, community-driven pilot project inside Portage Place.
Pihtikwè, pronounced “pee-tih-kway”, is a Cree word meaning “Come in,” a way of welcoming visitors into your home. The name reflects the spirit and purpose of this space.
WHY WE CREATED PIHTIKWÈ SKATEPARK
In a city where freezing temperatures and ice-covered concrete prevent outdoor skateboarding for at least one-third of the year, having access to a safer and inclusive indoor space is essential for Winnipeg’s skateboarding community. With no indoor facility available, the Manitoba Skateboarding Coalition rallied the community together to respond to this need.
BUILT WITH COMMUNITY. MADE FOR EVERYONE.
OUR SUPPORTERS
Standing with us every step of the way
This park would not exist without the support of our partners and community. The Spence Neighbourhood Association walks alongside us as our charitable partner, helping young skaters feel supported in their own neighbourhood. The Forks North Portage Partnership invests in opportunities that keep young people active, connected, and thriving in the heart of downtown.
OUR FOCUS
Through community collaboration:
We work to make skateboarding accessible for everyone by creating a safe indoor space to ride year-round, connect with friends, and feel part of something bigger. We bring life and connection to downtown Winnipeg through programs and community involvement. We celebrate the diverse voices that make our skate community strong and help young people feel confident to try, fall, get back up, and keep going.
